Cegep sketch: Funny/Winded Story?

This was an in-class assignment for a larger project us third year illustration students were working on. The big picture was a scene, drawn with the specs a would-be-employer was giving us ( Ie our teacher constantly throwing us curve balls) one was in our 4th week working on it, we had to somehow add a Griffon to the darn drawing.

The super fun part was after we gathered references and worked on our Griffon, we had a battle of the sketches. 30 something students, including myself were to put our works on the board 2 at a time and have quick votes to see who would be kicked off and who's Griffon would move on to battle another.

Here's my contribution

Then the famous incident happened. My friend drew a purposely and ridiculously goofy Griffon that although was cute and dopey wouldn't fit with everyones scenery illustration ( Did I mention that? Whichever Griffon won, that style of bird/lion had to be integrated into everyones scene seamlessly)

Everyone was voting his Griffon to win because it was cute, forgetting if it did win - we would have to completely re-do our scenery to fit with its goofy design. After a few would-be winners were voted off instead of his (and he knew it was a joke drawing) it came to me and him...I was winning a few battles and was worried coming against his.

I was promptly kicked off my winning streak.

I think this was when our teacher, John, thought it best to really drive the point home: If we kept voting the goofy sketch to stay, we all were going to have to basically re-start our illustration to fit with his Griffons design. Luckily everyone then understood and the very talented Melissa won the battle!

In the end it worked out because her style sheet was beyond perfect.   Yay Melissa!
